Product Description
Compact in size, huge in sound, the NuForce W-1 powered subwoofer has a built-in power amplifier boasting 50 watts of peak power. That’s huge for a desktop sound system! It’s the perfect partner for NuForce Icon desktop amplifiers and speaker systems, but also plays well with other high-quality audio gear. With its variable crossover and phase-adjustment features, the high-performance NuForce W-1 subwoofer is designed to operate seamlessly with the NuForce Icon and S-X speaker systems for a low-end extension to 50 Hz. It will bring new life to your favorite music, movies, games, and more. In terms of tempo, speed and compatibility, the lightning fast response of the W-1’s ‘Class-D’ amplifier permits the subwoofer to operate in perfect alignment with the NuForce S-1 or S-X speaker. The W-1’s adjustable crossover permits it to excel with any bookshelf or desktop speaker. The W-1 has a 5.25″ highly responsive paper cone woofer. The RCA and 3.5mm stereo line inputs give you important connection options. The MDF medium density fiberboard construction with tuned port construction provides the design and rigidity that superior bass reproduction requires. Controls consist of a volume control, variable crossover frequency, ‘Auto On/Off Mode Select Switch,’ and continuously variable phase alignment (see below for more information on this great feature). The W-1’s choice of black plus four leg colors (black, red, silver, or blue) complements and matches the Icon amplifier. As a matter of practical application, for a typical subwoofer crossover at 120 Hz, one wavelength of sound will be 9.4 feet long. For every 9.4 feet of distance difference between main speakers and the subwoofer from the listening position, there will be a 360 degree (i.e., one wavelength) phase shift. If the distance difference is half this, or 4.7 feet, then the main speakers and subwoofer will be out of phase by 180 degrees, thereby creating an audible notch at the crossover frequency.

I bought the Icon with the S1 a couple of month ago, and yes I liked them. Then I got the upgraded power supply and the W1 today. And again I like them very much. The power supply really adds value (lower frequencies and midrange primarily), that is more air moved. Without saying the sub W1 brings it to another league now. These comments are high-level only, and I can not compare to any other desktop equipment. However, I can tell you that I normally listen music with a NAIM/Thiel audio combination that is much more expensive; and yes I enjoy the NuForce combo very much too.
