I have bought and used a number of so-called portable speakers. Some were just too big and bulky to take with me. Others sounded like a toy.
This wonderful gem is great. It is small enough to throw in my suitcase without worrying about bulk or weight. The sound is absolutely superb. I hooked it up and played various tunes from my library and the sound was incredible. The instrument nuances, the volume, the quality was amazing. I looked over at it and couldn't believe my ears.
This is a wonderful product by a great company. I highly recommend it. |
Excellent Mono Speaker

| I've only had this speaker for 24 hours, but I can say that so far it's been excellent. I got it for my Thinkpad T400 laptop because the internal speakers were not loud enough, and some things, like DVD movies, or watching TV from my Slingbox had really low volume. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on the laptop. I plugged in the speaker and Windows installed the driver without a hitch (no CD needed). It worked immediately thereafter. The native speakers are disabled when you plug this one in, and all the volume controls, including the hardware volume buttons on the laptop, work without change on the new speaker. If you unplug it while it's in use the native speakers take over seamlessly. The sound quality is excellent as compared to the native laptop speakers, and the volume, wow! I have the volume set at 5%, which is providing about the same volume of sound as the native T400 speakers provide at 100% volume. If I run the volume all the way up I can easily hear the sound at a comfortable level in the next room, and there is very little distortion. This speaker won't take the place of a set of powered stereo speakers; but for the price, portability, and the fact that it runs off the USB port without any other power source, you can't beat it with a stick. |
Cannot be beat in sound quality for its size

I already had the orbitMP3 iM237 and loved it before the orbitUSB came my way. The two speakers are different in some key areas (battery powered vs USB powered), but they are the same (thankfully) in audio quality. The orbitUSB is really just for laptops and netbooks, it is powered by USB which is also the audio connection, so you cannot use this with an mp3 player. One small design improvement was made by way of a foldout stand so that the speaker can be propped up at a 45 degree angle to direct the sound.
It is simply impressive the sound that this speaker produces, it is LOUD for its deceptively small size, but it is also crisp and clear. It only starts to distort (like most any speaker) if you put the volume on max with a lot of bass. My built in laptop speakers are not loud enough and this speaker definitely does the job and is, in fact, more power than I'd ever need it to be for a laptop speaker...a welcome surprise!
The case is very sturdy and rugged, it looks like it could take a beating...handy for all of you offroading extreme laptop users. It comes with a carry strap for the speaker itself as well as a semi rigid padded neoprene-like case with a carabiner clip. It's also worth mentioning the USB cord is about 14 inches, not too short, but not terribly long, either. If you have an idea where you want to place this speaker, make sure that length will work from where your USB port is located.

| I received my iML 237 speaker from Amazon within 5 days of placing my order. I ordered it the day Amazon had it listed for sale for the first time, so I know I was one of the first people to get this speaker. I was very surprised (almost shocked) by the sound quality. I was looking for a speaker to use on my laptop that I could also take with me on business trips. I think I hit the jackpot on this purchase. The sound quality is excellent and the volume is awesome. I control the sound from my laptop sound control. The speaker is small enough to fit in my laptop travel case. The small zippered case that comes with this speaker to protect it while traveling makes this speaker purchase about perfect. The one thing to watch is your laptop battery. This USB speaker gets its power from your laptop. How fast your battery runs down is something to keep an eye on. I recommend the iML 237 speaker without any hesitation. |

| Prior to purchase this little USB speaker, I was using 2 desktop PC speakers for my notebook online TV viewing and listening to music. lines all around my desk between the notebook and electricity wall socket. sometimes people are tripped by the lines. Since the purchasing of this little speaker, it not only replaced all of the unnecessary lines and 2 larger sized speakers but also out performed the sound quality of my old two PC speakers. There is one thing need to be improved from the manufacturer: the instruction of sound volume control is not good and the speaker's volume is low by default setting. There is no volume control nob on the speaker and one paged instruction of two pictures doesn't give your good idea of how to solve this problem. Here is the way of how to do it: after insert USB to the computer, open Control panel classic view, double click the Sound icon, click on the Speakers USB Sound Device, then you will see the Properties at the right lower portion of the menu. Open the Properties' Levels menu you will find the USB speaker's default volume was set to lower side. Just move the volume to the highest and make sure the options of "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" and "Give exclusive mode applications priority" are checked (which is default) under the Advance menu, then check OK and you are all set. After this setting up you will be able to adjust your speak volume from your notebook volume control or any online audio program volume control to a very high volume level. |

I was a little hesitant because of all the other reviews of this speaker but it's time to change those. The sound quality is great! I have to admit it plays the highs naturally more than the lows(the speaker is the size of a tweeter), but the lows are there and with an equalizer you can fix that. The cord is short so if you want to use it on a desktop you will need an extension. Great sturdy feel, made of good material.
Pro's:
-small size BIG sound
-usb only, no extra power or need to plug into a 3.5mm jack
-portable too
Con's:(of any)
-With the stand out it is a little wobbly, may fall over
-speaker life expectancy may be short?
about the last con, because it is portable I expect it may break from usage, if it does i will update, if I don't? well its still working!!
I just found something in the packaging, it also comes with a two year warranty, so i guess i will have this a while |
Big sound from such a small speaker!

Being someone who has bought and trust the Altec Lansing name I was happy to review this item. One of the first items I bought was the Altec Lansing iM207 Orbit-MP3 for iPod and MP3 Players which I use for my iPod Touch. This product is very similar in sound but does not have the same function.
I will admit I was a bit leery of the speaker since it was mono. I already have a cheap but good sounding speaker set in my office where I keep my desktop. I work on my laptop daily for hours and bought my laptop for the harman/kardon built in speakers.
The speaker was very easy to plug in and immediately my (laptop) PC running Vista installed the drivers for it. I like the fact it uses only the USB port for the power supply. I don't have to worry about an extra cord for that. However being a laptop I am only able to place the speaker on the right or left, not both like a normal laptop would be set up. However, I must say the sound is a lot better than I expected! For the size it plays everything like a full set of speakers would! I played some rock music, metal, watched some pop videos, even listened to audio books and I could not hear any distortion at all. Everything played so clearly I had to keep looking at the speaker to make sure it was coming from such a small unit. I am very impressed with the sound. It might be a small speaker but the sound is loud!
I liked that you can control the volume through the speaker dial on your laptop. Make sure it is turned down when you plug it in or you will be blown away as I was when I first plugged it in. There are only two things I do not like about this item. I do not like the fact it cancels your regular speakers while in use. I understand you can only have one or the other but being able to add to your sound would be a bonus. I also was not impressed with the back of the unit and how it stands. I tested it on several surfaces and it wobbles left and right on all. It appears to not be my unit but the way it was designed. For the price point I would want a sturdier stand for it to sit up on.
All in all a lot better than I thought it would be given the size. I don't know if I will have much use for it but if something ever happened to my speakers I know what I am grabbing first!
